Weight fluctuation, aging, and genetics are the main factors that contribute to sagging skin on the upper arms. No amount of exercise or topical products can tighten the skin or improve its drooping appearance. Brachioplasty, also called an arm lift, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms to improve their appearance and increase mobility.
Benefits of Brachioplasty
- Removes excess skin of the upper arms commonly referred to as “bat wings”
- Removes excess fat deposits in the upper arms
- Tightens the underlying tissue that defines the shape of the upper arms
General anesthesia is most commonly used during brachioplasty to keep you comfortable during the procedure. In most cases, the incision will begin near the armpit and extend down the inner part of the arm. The length of the incision will depend on the amount of correction needed. The pattern of the incision is usually a straight line, but it may deviate if the fat or excess skin is not evenly distributed. Dr. Corbin eliminates any excess fat with liposuction, removes excess skin, and the tightens and reshapes the underlying tissues. After redraping the skin over the new, youthful arm contour, he then closes the incisions with sutures.
Recovery and Results
Recovery from arm lift surgery lasts one to two weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure and your body’s ability to heal. Immediately after surgery, bandages are applied to your incisions, and a compression garment may be worn to minimize swelling and to help your arms take on their new contours. A drainage tube may also be placed temporarily beneath the skin to remove excess fluid. Dr. Corbin will give you specific instructions for how to care for your incisions and will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing well. Most patients take two weeks off from work, and they should avoid heavy lifting and exercise for six weeks.
Brachioplasty patients will have a scar from the incisions, but it will fade significantly with time. Patients find that this is a small tradeoff for the slender appearance, increased mobility, and boost in confidence this procedure provides.
