A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can help you achieve a firm, toned stomach. It is one of the most popular plastic surgeries in the United States, with nearly 130,000 done each year, and, when performed on the right candidate, their results can be transformative.
Tummy tuck surgery provides both aesthetic and physical improvement—providing a slimmer, more toned abdomen to show off on the beach while correcting separated abdominal muscles, improving posture, repairing ventral hernias, and relieving the lower back pain caused by belly pooches.
Tummy tuck surgery provides long-lasting results, but they are not necessarily permanent.
One of the most common questions we hear from patients is, “How can I maintain my tummy tuck results?” While every patient is different, you can do some simple things to keep your abs looking great for years to come.
Can Regular Exercise Help Maintain My Tummy Tuck Results?
In most cases, abdominoplasty patients should refrain from any vigorous exercise for at least six weeks following their procedure, although recovery times vary. During recovery, patients can stay active by walking, but they need to refrain from all other activities until their plastic surgeon clears them.
Following the recovery period, regular workouts are necessary to keep your tone, build muscle, and burn fat—three things that will help you maintain your tummy tuck results. Be sure not to over-focus on your abdomen—while some stomach exercises are ok, too much early on can backfire.
Should I Follow a Special Diet After My Tummy Tuck?
There is no such thing as a ‘tummy tuck diet,’ but you should focus on eating clean, healthy foods. Remember, abdominoplasty is not weight loss surgery—it is a cosmetic procedure. Having a tummy tuck doesn’t mean you can eat junk food and overindulge. Doing so will only lead to weight gain.
Losing and gaining body fat can dramatically alter your surgical results, leading to stretched, saggy skin. This is why it is best to maintain a stable weight after your tummy tuck—whatever that weight may be.
Can I Get Pregnant After a Tummy Tuck?
Physiologically speaking, yes.
A tummy tuck does not interfere with your reproductive organs. Still, it is a good idea to hold off on having abdominoplasty until after you are no longer planning on becoming pregnant. This is because the dramatic weight gain in the abdominal area during pregnancy is likely to reverse the positive impacts of a tummy tuck.
