When Should You Consider a Breast Reduction?
by Frederic Corbin
July 18th, 2018

A perky bust is sought after by many women. It’s seen as a sign of beauty and youthfulness, and many women strive to enhance their chest. However, large, voluptuous breasts are not always the positive feature that women think they are. For women with extremely large breasts, they can actually be more painful than positive. Larger breasts can be painful with the weight of their size pulling your shoulders out of their natural position. It can also cause unwanted stress and emotional concerns due to unwanted attention, inconveniences while going about your daily life, or difficulty finding well-fitting clothing. If you are ready to lessen the burden of oversized breasts, Dr. Corbin can perform breast reduction surgery to give you a more natural breast size and a new lease on life!

Will a Breast Reduction Help Me?

Overly large breasts can affect women in ways they don’t even realize. Most obviously, women with larger breast sizes likely find it difficult to shop for clothing and undergarments. Bras for large breasts are typically only available online from custom shops. Additionally, finding dresses and shirts that fit well can be challenging, particularly if your breasts are disproportionate to the rest of your body (specifically your tummy and arms). Outside of their appearance, large breasts are much heavier for you than smaller breasts. The daily pull of their weight can create chronic pain in the shoulders, neck, and back. Large breasts can even be the cause of some chronic headaches. Large breasts can also make you feel self-conscious about your body and lose confidence in your appearance. The daily difficulties of managing large breasts can bring about emotional or psychological discomfort. Breast reduction candidates can restore their bust to a more manageable size that is in better proportion to their body shape.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Dr. Corbin performs the surgery as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. He uses three different techniques; the technique chosen for your procedure will depend on the size of your current breasts and the size that you wish them to be. Before your surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Corbin, where he will perform an examination to better determine which technique would be most beneficial to you.

During surgery, Dr. Corbin makes the incisions and removes as much tissue as necessary to achieve the desired breast size. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with the procedure to rid excess fat as well as contour the shape of the breast. If necessary, Dr. Corbin can reposition the areola and nipples so they’re in a more natural position on the breast. Once the optimal breast size is achieved, Dr. Corbin will ensure that you have a natural shape. He will then perform a lift to better position your new breasts.

Circumvertical Technique

Dr. Corbin makes an incision around your areola and extends it down the length of the breast to the inframammary fold.

SPAIR Technique (Short Scar Periareolar Inferior Pedicle Reduction)

Your incisions remain solely around the areola and may extend just slightly down your breasts.

Anchor Technique

This technique is rarely used due to the increased level of visible scarring. Here, the incision is made around the areola, down the breast line, and then is extended across the inframammary fold (the crease where your breast meets your chest).

A breast reduction can greatly improve your quality of life by reducing pain and discomfort, improving your ability to find well-fitting clothing, and increasing your confidence levels.
